No, nick. It's a natural clay called "tabatinga" around here. Good stuff for small models.

What are those bronze coloured crosses - are they some sort of fastener for the netting?

Actually the crosses were made of aluminum and protected with varnish. They were intended to prevent the clay from falling during the process of modeling. The wet and dry stages would lead to crack the clay surface and maybe fall in parts. But at the end I found out that wasn't necessary.
